Interior Revelations: What's Hot & Happening in Design for 2023

Ever walked into your own home and felt like you've just entered a stranger's abode? Well, that's me every few weeks. In my household, moving furniture from one corner to the other is like changing outfits. Let's just say I've inherited this 'redecorating' gene from my mother. Our homes are constantly evolving. There's a humorous anecdote my family loves to share. Every time my husband returns from a business trip, he'd open the door, gaze around, and with a perplexed expression ask, "Am I in my home or somewhere else?" It's hilarious every single time! But let's dive into what you're really here for: the juiciest design trends of 2023!

The Evolution of Interior Design: A Timeless Journey of Trends

Before that, let's take a brief stroll down memory lane. Interior design is as old as human civilization itself. From the opulent chambers of Egyptian pharaohs to the minimalist Zen gardens of ancient Japan, our interiors have always reflected who we are, our societal values, and the technological advancements of the era.

Did you know that the ancient Romans had lavish lounges filled with plush cushions and reclining couches called "tricliniums" where they would dine while lying down? Or that the Gothic era brought towering arched ceilings and intricate woodwork, an ode to divine beauty and celestial aspirations?

Fast forward to the 20th century, and we meet design legends like Charles and Ray Eames, Le Corbusier, and Eileen Gray. Their pioneering work laid the foundations for modern design principles. They taught us that form follows function and that our homes can be both beautiful and purposeful.

As for today, the world of interior design is constantly evolving, reflecting the societal shifts and technological advancements of our times. This year, it's all about expression, individuality, and embracing both the old and the new.

Lets talk about some particular interior designers

Now, speaking of embracing the old and the new, let's highlight some trailblazing interior designers, both from the past and the present:

Eero Saarinen: A Finnish-American architect known for his sleek and futuristic designs. His Tulip chair, a hallmark of mid-century modern design, is still widely popular today.

Dorothy Draper: her original name was Martha Stewart. Not only did she start the first interior design company in the United States, she was a celebrity in her own right-her name was synonymous with all things interior design in the 1940s and 50s. Draper was known for her exuberant color palettes and bold patterns, turning away from the muted, masculine designs of her time.

Kelly Wearstler: My todays favorite designer. She founded her own design firm Kelly Wearstler Interior Design in the mid-1990s, serving mainly the hotel industry, and now designs across high-end residential, commercial, retail and hospitality spaces. A modern design maven, Wearstler's dynamic and bold approach has revolutionized the look, feel, and meaning of modern American design.

Bobby Berk: A rising star in the design world and a member of the Fab Five from Netflix's "Queer Eye," Berk's functional and fresh designs resonate with millennials and Gen Z alike.

With such a rich tapestry of design history to draw from, the possibilities for 2023 are endless. But let's get into the specifics.

Top Interior Design Trends of 2023

  1. Eclectic Maximalism: Gone are the days of minimalistic whites and greys. This year, expect to see a surge in bold patterns, vibrant colours, and a mix of various design eras, all in one space! Think of it as controlled chaos – a reflection of the world outside.

  2. Natural Elements: The emphasis on sustainability and returning to our roots has given rise to designs centred around organic materials like wood, rattan, and bamboo. Nature is making a grand entrance into our living rooms, and we're here for it[1,2].

  3. Earth Tones: Browns and pinks are in vogue this year. Think of a coffee-infused raspberry smoothie – that's the shade everyone's raving about. Mauve, especially, has been hailed as the colour of the year. It's like our homes are basking in the sunset glow 24/7.

  4. Silver Accents: Step aside gold and bronze; silver is here to dazzle! It adds that touch of everyday sophistication. It's like wearing diamond studs with your jeans – casual yet chic.

  5. Neo-Brutalism: Think of this as brutalism with a heart. It's inspired by the past but warmed up for the present. It's like giving your grandma's old armchair a modern, plush makeover.

  6. Sustainable Design Choices: With global warming rearing its ugly head, the design world is taking note. It's all about making eco-friendly choices that don't compromise on style.

  7. Indestructible Fabrics: Imagine spilling red wine on your white couch and just wiping it off! That's right, the fabrics of today are meant to endure, and they look absolutely posh.

  8. Saturated Paint Colors: Gone are the days of bland walls. 2023 is all about making bold choices, from enchanting blues to regal purples.

  9. Plaster: Adding depth and texture to spaces, plaster is the material de jour. It's like the renaissance of interior design materials.

  10. Micro Luxury: Luxury isn't just about oversized chandeliers and gold faucets anymore. It's about the fine details and rich textures that transform the mundane into the exquisite.

  11. Listening Rooms: Vinyl is back, and so are rooms dedicated to just music. It's like having a private concert hall in your home.

  12. Natural Stone Slabs: These are not just for the countertops. They're making their way to walls, floors, and everywhere in between. It's like wearing a diamond necklace but for your home.

Conclusion to Design Trends in 2023

To wrap up, while it's fun to play around with trends, there's something to be said about timeless pieces. I have a few decor items that have been with me for over 20 years. They've travelled continents, witnessed life's ups and downs, and still hold a special place in my heart. So, while it's tempting to redo your space every season, invest in pieces that resonate with you. Trust me, years down the line, they'll be the stories you tell over a glass of wine.

Until next time, keep shining and redecorating! 😘

P.S. Don't be surprised if my living room looks like it belongs in another galaxy the next time you visit! 😉
